Laboratory for Development and Automation of Bioprocesses

The boom of biotechnology has posed a challenge for bioprocess industries: how to keep path in a field where the advance of science is extremely rapid, regulation by governmental agencies is intense and environmental restrictions are increasingly tighter? Aggregation of process engineering concepts and techniques from the very beginning of the development of new bioprocesses can make the difference between rapid obsolescence and economical survival in this extremely competitive branch.

Chemical/biochemical engineering can provide important contributions to this area, helping to enhance yields and productivity through the integration of processes in multipurpose plants and the improvement of automated monitoring, fault detection, control, and optimization algorithms. Inter- and multidisciplinary research is a key factor here, and the Laboratory for Development and Automation of Bioprocesses, LaDABio, has intense cooperation with other laboratories from Academia and Industry.
